What Is A Bed Sham In Comforter Sets?

Adulthood can be difficult and you have to learn from it.

Ask around and you’re likely to get many guesses. It could even be an internet scam. Don’t worry.

Our experts have the answer to all your questions about bed shams. Bed shams are decorative pillows that cover the pillow.

What’s the purpose of a bed sham?

Bed shams can be used for decorative or aesthetic reasons, as we have already mentioned. While pillows serve a purpose when they are used, they can also be used as accessories.

The sham adds visual interest to your cushions, making them more functional and stylish to match your living room or bedroom decor.

These pillows can be used to create frills and textures for your interior design.

Different Types Of Bed Shams

Bed shams can be made in a variety of sizes, just like pillowcases. Most bedding sets that include shams will match the dimensions of your bed, but you have the option to mix and match if necessary.

Queen Sham

  • Fits queen size cushions
  • Measure 76 cm x 51 cm
  • Queen-sized cushions are a size in between that isn’t as popular as King or standard size. Queen-sized shams may be harder to find.

European Sham:

  • Square cushions fit easily
  • Measurements 66cm by 66cm
  • They are more inclined to be decorative

Boudoir Sham

  • These cushions can be used as decorative pillows or smaller.
  • Measurements: 30 cm x 41 cm
  • Boudoir pillows often include shams. However, you can change their appearance.

There are many types of closures for shams. This is how you can attach them to your pillow. Many shams have a slit at their back that covers the pillow. However, some may have a zipper or button closure to provide a better fit.

The majority of shams are designed to complement the bedding set that they come with. They use the same cloth as the comforter or duvet. While many are made of cotton, others may be made of silk, velvet, polyester or cloth blends.

Shams often have lace around their edges. However, the finishing can easily be an extension to the mattress’s material sham. Some shams might have tassels or pompoms as borders, or other layout flairs.

How To Make Your Own Bed Sham

A bed sham is easy to make. You will need good eyesight, decent cloth and basic sewing skills to make a bed sham. It is better to use thicker fabrics and have someone to help you (especially if you intend to use it along the border, as thicker material will hold up better). But any substance should be fine.

Materials And Supplies You Will Need

  • Fabric

Fabric for the front, back and flanges is required. They could be different or the same.

  • Matching thread
  • Pins
  • A ruler
  • Scissors

Step 1: Trim the cloth to fit your pillow

For common sizes, you can either measure yourself or refer to the measurements I have provided earlier. For a more substantial look, you can make your flanges larger.

You can make them smaller or larger, it’s up to you what you want. Once you have all the pieces, cut your back in half so that it fits into the opening.

Step 2: Make Your Sham.

Start by exposing your front-facing pillow panel to the sun. Next, place the rear panel’s side up on top of your front panel. You should align all edges. The back panels should be able to float between 8 and 25 cm.

Step 3: Sew The Sham

Your Mattress sham should be sewn around the borders.

Once you’re done, simply turn the sham in the inside through the opening at the back.

Step 4: Flanges

If you want the surrounding flanges to be joined, this step is not necessary. Join another stitch edge about 2 inches to your bed sham. When you cut your fabric, make sure to measure the extra inches.

Step 5: Add Your Pillow

Now you can put the bed sham on and relax!
